‘Extremely special’ for Cam Neely to lift Stanley Cup

During his career, Cam Neely was more likely to inflict tears than shed them.

But the beloved former Bruin and current team president didn’t try to hide his emotions after the team he helped put together accomplished something he could not during his playing days: Bring the Stanley Cup to Boston.

“It’s extremely special,” said Neely, who came to the Bruins from the Canucks during a legendary 1986 trade and scored 345 of his 395 career goals in a Bruins sweater. “It’s hard to really put into words, but it’s incredibly special to be able to say that you’re involved with a Stanley Cup champion team.”

Neely, along with defenseman Raymond Bourque, was a stalwart of the 1988 and ‘90 Bruins teams that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals, only to lose to powerful Edmonton squads both times.

The Bruins had not been back to the Cup Finals since . . . until this year. And this time, they will come back to Boston with the prize.

“I know it means a great deal to the fans,” Neely said. “So many of them can barely remember ’72. It’s been a long time. They’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and it’s really special for all of us to watch this team deliver it.”

Neely paused.

“To be out here now couldn’t be more special,” he said.
