Umpire Joe West cooled down Yankees outfielder Karim Garcia after a force out at second base, an altercation that would set the stage for later fireworks.
Red Sox starter Pedro Martinez engaged in an argument with Jorge Posada after the dispute at second base between Todd Walker and Garcia.
David Ortiz restrained Manny Ramirez after benches emptied following a pitch from Roger Clemens to Ramirez in the fourth inning.

Police responded to an incident in the Yankees bullpen in the ninth inning. Garcia left the game and police escorted bullpen attendant Paul Williams out after the incident.
Zimmer, 72, left the park on a stretcher after the game.
