Striking poses from F. Holland Day

Props, costumes a staple of images

“Making a Presence: F. Holland Day in Artistic Photography,” which runs through July 31 at the Addison Gallery of American Art, at Phillips Academy, Andover, showcases the work of Day (1864-1933), a Boston-based photographer and hothouse character who used props, costumes, and role-playing to remarkable ends. To secure a place for photography among the fine arts, Day used the camera to ape painting and traditional genres. Just as important, his posing in multiple roles answered a transparent need for self-presentation.
