Ships’ noise hinders whale communication

Anyone who lives near a busy highway can sympathize with the North Atlantic right whale: Research released Wednesday shows the leviathans off New England’s coast are subject to such a constant undersea din it is difficult for them to hear each other most of the time.

It is a hazard that could be hindering the critically endangered species’ ability to navigate, avoid predators, and care for calves.

The only answer to this problem of right whale communications problems is to shut down the port of Boston and send the salt, containers, oil, LNG and other cargoes to other ports, such as Eastport or New London. No way can we allow right whales to be further impacted on by uncaring humans. Oh yeah, when did he right whale population increase from the 300 regularly reported until about 2008 to the 450 reported in this story? A regular whale population boom.

How did the whale population ever survive WWII? There was probably a hundred times more shipping in NE waters with some depth charges thrown in for good measure. Seriously, take a look at old photos of the ports of Boston and New York from the 1940's and 1950's. They were jammed packed with ships, unlike today where these same harbors. paricularly Boston, look more like oversized marinas instead of major seaports.
