US investigates whether Libya attack was planned to mark 9/11

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Obama administration, roiled by the first killing of a U.S. ambassador in more than 30 years, is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was a planned terrorist strike to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and not a spontaneous mob enraged over an anti-Islam YouTube video.

President Barack Obama declared in a White House appearance that the U.S. would ‘‘work with the Libyan government to bring to justice’’ those who killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. The attack on the Benghazi consulate was ‘‘a planned, coordinated, well-executed military style event,’’ House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers said.

Yesterday's riots in Egypt and Libya were fomented ostensibly by a Youtube video produced by an Israeli citizen with American backers. With a history of knowing that such extreme views on Islam inflames certain elements of the poorer Islamic countries of the world it went viral. Death and destruction has followed. The US recognizing a small group who sees red with such inciting material tried to bring calm to the situation. It stated that such views are not approved by our government but it is unacceptable that people react with violence. Instead of letting his government, of which Mitch Romney is currently not a part, handle the situation he puts in his 2 un-welcomed cents by showing no sense. He called our government's action "apologizing." He shows little recognition how to minimize widening a conflict so we are not again at war. If such a conflict does grow so American troops are needed the draft should be implemented and his 5 amazing sons should be first in line. Mitt Romney would subject our soldiers to harm, death, and repeated tours because he does not get it. When oversees crises occur it is the President who is in charge, not a dangerously misinformed Republican candidate. Questions dealing with War and Peace on an immediate basis falls to the Chief Executive. This is a time to let the President do his job. He does not need advice from war hungry neo-conservatives.

In the same way as siblings fight but defend each other outside the house, Mitt should support the commander in chief of his own government in these sensitive international times.

Let the Israeli's fight their own battles, not with American blood!  They (the Netanyahu government) wants the USA to get into another war with Iran and Basile is the catalyst.  Religious extremists, be they Islamists, Christians, or Jews) have no place in the modern world.

Allowing these sub-humans to dictate what we can and cannot say - about anything - is not acceptable, although I question whether these coordinated attacks had much to do with the subject film. Ignorance and hate are a volatile combination especially when, as Bob Dylan put it, "When you got nothin', you got nothin' to lose."

Mega Dittos !!!

My heart goes out to the families of those who were lost in service to the United States.  However, if ignorance and hate are problems, then I think you should take back the "sub-human" comment.  Was this directed at all Muslims, or were you talking about the angry mob?  Unfortunately, human beings on every continent and of every religious persuasion have formed angry mobs.  Sadly, Libya is a virtually lawless place right now, and our diplomats placed themselves in danger to serve their country.

Our president just read a statement, in a monotone, showing no emotion about the murder of our ambassador: spoke about our country's religious tolerance in the same tone as he said "there is no excuse for (the murder)". I miss Ronald Reagan.

It didn't take long for the "I hate Obama" comments to come flying.  Forget the dead.  Should we get all the facts.  Should we pay attention to the loss.  Nah, let's analyze how we think the President feels.  The President references our tolerance for religion while at the same time expressing our rejection of the violence.  But hey, that's not a reasonable statement it is somehow not appropriate.  Mr. Romney takes a statement from prior to the event and broadcasts it across the media, but does anyone say this is uncalled for?  Of course not.  American's die in a hienous act and what do we get, politics.  Simply amazing.

With you 100%.  TheSystemWorked's comments are unforgivable.  Barbara's are only slightly better.  The sad thing is, did you really expect any better?

Let me add if I had my way they'd lock up all the preachers, Imams, Priests and Rabbi's as a threat to civilization.   But when it comes to God I'm an extremist.  God is alright with me but religion is rotten at its core.

Three Ambassadors have been killed in the line of duty serving Democratic Presidents, and three have been killed serving Republican Presidents. Is there a point you are trying to make?

You are talking religious zealots, much like political zealots there is no reasonable response, no possibility of turning on the "tribe" and saing you are wrong.  It is the great weakness of the tribe "we're right".  You can't ever say we're wrong.

Not quite sure how the Israelis got caught up in this thread, but just listened to an extensive story on NPR about who made the movie and how the video trailer got into Egyptian/Libyan hands. The thoughtful, intelligent Rev Terry Jones from Florida has been promoting an inaccurate and inflammatory movie about Mohammed (called him a pedophile among other things). His PR guy is an Egyptian Christian with contacts in the Egyptian media who,at the direction of Jones, sent these contacts the trailer to the video (the trailer is the youtube video). Thus creating the storm of protest and violence across North Africa. The movie has been shown only once in a theater in Hollywood. It is a low budget, poorly made film whose director used a pseudonym. This tragedy was instigated by an American who deliberately called Arab attention to a movie he knew would anger them. This makes me so angry and sad. Ambassador Stevens and his staff members would be alive today if Jones & his PR guy hadn't poked the crazy lion of Muslim extremists. It's just like last year when he didn't consider the lives of American soldiers serving in the Middle East when he burned the Koran. Actions have consequences.

" article says ambassador in more than 30 years, is investigating whether the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya was a planned terrorist strike to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and not a spontaneous mob enraged over an anti-Islam YouTube video" OF COURSE, it was a planned attack, and NOT due to any video. The video idea was put forth by the mainstream media and by bloggers who are DESPERATE to avoid tying this attack to organized terrorism and to protect obama from charges of GROSS INCOMPETENCE in foreign policy. ---But all you had to do is interpret the Arabic tweets to find out what REALLY happened.--This was an well planned out attack on 9/11. iT was a REVENGE attack by radical Islamists who were ENRAGED at the Obama Administration's and the recent Democratic Party convention's repeated "SPIKIMG THE BALL" with regard to the killing of Osama bin Laden. --When israel carries out a enemy killing does it continuially BRAG and BRAG about it? Does it broadcast to the world how it was done? NO and NO. ---I watched Hillary Clinton's speech Wed morning on CNN. "A small group" of people who do not represent the Libyn people carried out the attack, said Hillary. her speech was weak and PATHETIC, as was the APOLOGY statement that came out of thre US embassy in Egypt. --Mitt Romney had every right to call out these speeches for what they were. --And Obama says "These people will be brought to justice" ?? Lets see you PROVE IT, Mr. Prresident. And heading to Las Vegas for a fundraiser is NOT the way to prove it.--A ratrher UNPRRESIDENTIAL move by the President while the embassy in Egypt right now is under seige by protestors.
