Failed Massachusetts presidential candidates

Unsuccessful presidential candidates from Massachusetts.

Michael Dukakis, Democrat, 1988

Background: Former Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis ran against Vice President George H.W. Bush in the 1988 election to succeed President Reagan. He lost by a landslide after failing to gain support even in many traditionally blue states.

Result: Bush: 426 electoral votes; Dukakis: 111 electoral votes

John Kerry, Democrat, 2004

Background: Kerry, the then-junior US Senator from Massachusetts, challenged incumbent President George W. Bush in 2004 on a foreign policy platform, but lost with 251 electoral votes after he was seen by some voters as elitist and out of touch.

Result: Bush: 286 electoral votes; Kerry: 251 electoral votes

Mitt Romney, Republican, 2012

Background: Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney failed to chip away at President Obama’s narrow swing-state leads in 2012. Romney struggled throughout the campaign to relate to the middle class as he tried to sell them on an economic policy that aimed to speed up recovery from the Great Recession.

Result: With Florida still too close to call, the current electoral count stands at: Obama, 303 electoral votes; Romney, 206 electoral votes.
