Nonprofit workers disciplined after cemetery photo

Two employees from a Cape Cod nonprofit have been placed on unpaid leave after a photo went viral on the Internet that showed one of them with her middle finger raised at Arlington National Cemetery, the company said. The photo was posted on a Facebook page of one of the women, the nonprofit, LIFE Inc., said in a statement. The photo has since been removed from the page, said the company, which did not name the women. But copies of the photo have been posted on a number of websites as criticism has rained down on the women, including a Facebook page demanding that both be fired.

I saw this story on the news last night -- of course, Fox25 was all over it.  But I still don't understand why their employment has anything to do with this.  Why should they be dsiciplined or fired by their employer?  What is the connection with their acts?  Didn't they do this on their own time?  Or were they supposed to somehow be on an employment-related trip to D.C.?  If not, revile them if you want, but they shouldn't necessarily lose their job for a stupid, thoughtless action.
