A two-year quest by Attorney General Martha Coakley to prove corruption charges against former state treasurer Timothy P. Cahill ended in a deadlocked jury Wednesday, a result that Cahill called “total vindication” even though it leaves the charges pending against him.
Coakley did not say whether she would retry the case, which lasted five weeks in Suffolk Superior Court and which led the jury to deliberate for more than 40 hours before Judge Christine M. Roach declared a mistrial.

Oh, for God's sakes!! If it's this hard to reach a verdict just let him go and stop wasting all our taxes on this foolishness!
Where's Martha Coakley today? What, no preening before the cameras? This was a sham prosecution, with Coakley using the catch-all "conspiracy" indictment to cast a net so wide the jury would have to return a guilty. She used Campbell as the best available stooge as the co-co-conspirator, apparently because he read or wrote a vague email. Of course, it would have made some sense if the "real" conspirators had been indicted. This prosecution was little more than Coakley's own political advertising, gone wrong naturally.
Martha needs to resign. She is an embarrassment. She handled this case in the same way she lost to Scott Brown. She couldn't even hold Ted Kennedy's seat. Go Away Martha.
Yes, the BOSTON GLOBE manages to find more Democrat corruption that Martha. The Globe! It's like shooting fish in a barrel in this state.
Martha is the best thing that every happened to this state. With your closed mind, you can't see it.
Coakley actually declared victory at her press conference in the wake of the mistrial. Seems she does not understand what a mistrial is. Not surprising. She didnt understand that a campaign doesnt get the holidays off nor that two landslide referenda FOR marijuana means she can stop getting local police and DAs to figure out new ways to prosecute Nixon's War on Drugs against pot smokers.
Hey, Martha: go home.
the vicotry was that Cahill was not found innocent. Martha is the best Attorney General this state has ever had.
When's she going after John Tierney?
“The nature of public corruption is such that it is often behind the scenes, and it can be insidious,” Coakley said. “It is difficult to prevent, and it can be very difficult to expose and prove accountability beyond a reasonable doubt to 12 jurors.” Public corruption can be exposed if you look for it Martha. The Globe Spotlight team regularly uncovers public corruption. I'm not sold that Cahill didn't use the ads to boost his campaign but going after someone who went up against the MA Democratic machine as your first big case might have not been the best thing to do.
The question is whether or not Cahill’s lottery ads had anything to say directly about his candidacy. No, the ads simply boasted about the lottery’s success. Even though this could have indirectly affected his campaign, still the ads, even if intentionally so designed, did not contain anything about his running for Governor. If he were not running for Governor, would the ads as such been considered even inappropriate? Why is it wrong to boast about success? The prosecution was baseless and wrongful from the start and if anybody should be investigated and possibly charged for her baseless prosecution it should be Martha Coakly.
And what did this cost the taxpayers? Martha won’t say. She has mercilessly put Mr. Cahill through hell and probably cost him much of his savings to bankroll his lawyers. I wonder what her hidden agenda was. Was it political?
The thing is that Cahill seems to think that this is a victory. In my opinion, he is not living in the real world, as he was not found 'innocent' it was a hung jury.
