A fire in a tractor trailer carrying cardboard in the Interstate 93 tunnel bottlenecked traffic for holiday travelers heading southbound this morning, State Police and Boston fire officials said.
The truck stopped in the area of Exit 23 at around 11:30 a.m. The tunnel was closed to traffic all lanes have since been reopened, fire officials said.
Steve MacDonald, of the Boston Fire Department, said that the ventilation system inside the tunnel remained open. Fire officials had put out the fire, but had to remove the cardboard from the truck to make sure it was out. The scene has since been cleared.
