Uxbridge crash after chase leaves 1 dead, 1 hurt

A driver fleeing police in a stolen sport utility vehicle from Rhode Island was killed after colliding with a pickup truck on Route 22 in Uxbridge Friday, the Worcester district attorney’s office said.

Uxbridge and Northbridge police were pursuing what they identified as a stolen Ford Explorer when it crashed at 3:17 p.m., said Tim Connolly, a spokesman for District Attorney Joseph E. Early Jr.

The suspect fleeing police, who was not identified Friday, was taken to Milford Hospital and was pronounced dead, Connolly said. The other driver, Anthony Southwick, 30, of Uxbridge, was hospitalized with serious injuries, the district attorney’s office said. Southwick was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, said Northbridge police Sergeant Shawn Heney.

Heney said his department received complaints of an erratic driver, but when officers attempted to stop the car, the driver sped off.

Northbridge police spotted the SUV in the Rockdale section of Northbridge and pursued on Route 122, the district attorney’s office said. When the vehicle crossed the Uxbridge town line, Northbridge police backed off and Uxbridge police continued the chase.
