Widespread cancellations expected; Logan to close

Airlines, passenger trains, and bus lines are canceling service Friday in anticipation of a major snowstorm.

Airlines are planning to shut operations at Logan International Airport early Friday afternoon and won’t resume flights until Saturday afternoon because of the expected snow storm, Massachusetts Port Authority officials said. Airlines are offering refunds for flights canceled due to the storm and waiving change fees for travel scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Airlines will start bringing in planes to get them in place for Sunday, but aren’t expected to offer regular outbound service on Saturday. With the exception of the Japan Airlines flight to Tokyo, which leaves at noon, there will be no international flights operating on Friday. Airport officials expect Friday morning to be busier than normal as passengers try to get out before the storm hits, and then – nothing.

“It’s going to be a ghost town,” said Edward Freni, director of aviation at Massport, which runs Logan.

Amtrak is canceling service between New York and Boston starting Friday afternoon, and is also suspending trains out of Springfield, Vermont, and Maine. Saturday cancellations have not yet been determined. Affected passengers can get a refund or a voucher for future travel.

Peter Pan Bus Lines canceled all of its service north of New York City, including in and out of Boston, beginning Friday. The bus line did not say when it would begin service again. Peter Pan bus tickets for canceled trips can be used for travel within three days once service resumes.
