Boston and the city’s response to the recent blizzard, were in the national spotlight Friday as the “Today” show broadcast from Faneuil Hall.
The show’s longtime anchor, Matt Lauer, applauded the mayor for the way the city handled the massive storm, one that Lauer , adopting his best Boston accent, said “hammahed’’ the city.
“You guys handled it very well,’’ Lauer told Menino.
“Well, thank you very much,’” Menino replied. “We did a fairly good job. We had some issues. But I think, overall, it was an A-plus job.’’
On Monday, the mayor had apologized for the slow pace of the snow recovery effort, particularly that some side streets remained impassable. Menino said later Friday that his A-plus report to Lauer was not an attempt to gloss over those problems but to “commend the effort of the entire city” as it got back on its feet.

“The crews were working all weekend,” he said. “But also the residents. The residents deserve a lot of credit for showing patience and pitching in to dig out their elderly neighbors and looking after those in need.”
