Bucolic Walden Pond
“A lake is the landscape’s most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth’s eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.” — Henry David Thoreau, “Walden,” 1854. As summer comes to an end, we take a look at a summer retreat visited by both the philosophers and the frolicker. Thoreau’s two- year stay on the shores of Walden Pond ended Sept 6, 1847. Since then, the lake has transformed from a summer retreat to a popular swimming hole. Since the later half of the 20th century, there has been a strong conservation effort to preserve the bucolic property. - Leanne Burden Seidel and Lisa Tuite
