Starving horses rescued in N.H.

Five malnourished horses were recovered from a home in Derry, N.H., and one of the animals, a colt, died a day later due to a lack of nourishment, officials said.

The Derry Animal Control Department was alerted about the horses, said Sheila Ryan, spokeswoman for the New Hampshire Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Ryan said the family that owned them simply did not have the money to care for the animals.

“By surrendering all of the five horses voluntarily, they have really done the right thing,” Ryan said.

“They got to the point where they knew that they couldn’t care for the horses.”

The family is not expected to face charges for their inadequate care, Ryan said.

The horses were recovered on two separate occasions, Oct. 23 and Oct. 25, and were taken directly to a veterinarian.

The colt was removed on Oct. 23, but died the next day, Ryan said.

“When the colt was born, he was unable to get nutrition from his mother,” Ryan said.

Ryan said the remaining four horses should fully recover.

“Once they gain their weight back they should be adoptable,” Ryan said.
