Amy Kirk shocked her Hingham High soccer teammates when she decided to take the field for the Division 2 state final against Arlington.
Just two days earlier, during a frigid South final against Scituate, the junior keeper dislocated her left knee in a freak injury.
Hingham won the South final handedly, 5-1. But would the Harbormen have their goalie for the state final?
Kirk was told by her doctors that the knee had popped back into place when she fell to the ground. There would be pain and some risk of re-injury, but the decision to play, or not play, rested with her.
Kirk made six saves as Hingham captured its first state title with a 3-2 victory.
