University of Massachusetts Lowell students will soon help Woburn detect illegal discharge of pollutants into its water bodies. The city recently accepted an offer by the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers to establish a Stream Team program in Woburn. Starting this fall, two to three student teams will perform water quality tests on some of the 10 major tributaries of the city’s drainage system. Using the data, the teams will work with city officials to identify areas where discharges are occurring and explore how to stop them. Some pilot testing may begin this summer. Participating students include Woburn residents Stephanie Collins and Rebecca Gonsalves. UMass Lowell initiated a similar program with the town of Lexington last year.
