Cash for poor families: Welfare and the children’s SSI program

Welfare benefits are no longer the top source of direct cash assistance for indigent children. For the past two years, the children's Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, which helps low-income families with disabled children, has distributed more money than welfare. There are still more welfare cases* than children's SSI cases, though the gap is narrowing.
