NEW YORK - Three decades ago, making a dance documentary would never have been in the cards for the filmmaker Wim Wenders. For years, Wenders had been largely immune to and unmoved by the ineffable virtues of modern dance, and he considered it a purely aesthetic art. As a film director, Wenders felt performance needed to be wrapped up in a story, driven by dialogue, character, and plot.
