Lila Downs gives traditional Mexican music a modern spirit

The classically trained musician keeps the traditions of her heritage alive

Lila Downs is a vibrant singer, first and foremost, who unleashes a classically trained voice that thunders with operatic tones one moment and then caresses in the next verse. She’s also a songwriter, an entertainer prone to bold attire and fierce dancing, and now a new mother. More than any of that, though, Downs has been a tireless student and ambassador of Mexican music. She comes to Berklee Performance Center on March 9 as part of World Music’s winter programming.
