Radcliffe Bailey looks back to move forward
He explores the Middle Passage in impressive show at Davis Museum
Radcliffe Bailey’s “Windward Coast’’ is the highlight of an impressive survey of Bailey’s work called “Memory as Medicine,’’ at the Davis Museum of Art at Wellesley College. “Windward Coast’’ is a pile of 35,000-odd wooden piano keys with black and white tips, shaped into an undulating, wind-whipped sea. A sculpted head, covered in black glitter, emerges from the waves of wood. It’s one of a series of shows devoted to African-Americans in Massachusetts this winter.
