Benjamin Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ to be performed in Boston, Providence

Written half a century ago, Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem’’ emerged from Britten’s despair at the bloodshed of the Second World War. It has become, perhaps, music’s preeminent antiwar statement and gets a healthy number of performances, given the large forces needed to perform it. In two concerts this weekend, conductor Richard Pittman will lead the New England Philharmonic - marking its 35th anniversary season - Chorus pro Musica, the Providence Singers, the Boston Children’s Chorus, and three vocal soloists.
