On Demand picks: ‘Sinbad,’ ‘Night at the Museum,’ ‘Center Stage’

SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS ★★ ½

(Encore on Comcast) This DreamWorks release is enough to keep kids amused on a rainy day but has precious little lasting entertainment value on its own. Cobbling together plot strands from the Arabian Nights and other cartoons, it sends the title adventurer (voiced by Brad Pitt) after a priceless relic guarded by Eris, the Goddess of Chaos (Michelle Pfeiffer). Bland vocal performances and an ungainly mix of hand-drawn and computer animation sink the ship. (PG; runs through June 1, 2013) TY BURR

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM ★★★

(Comcast Movie Collections: Best of the 2000s) Surprisingly engaging family noise, with an unbeatable premise: What if the creatures and dioramas of New York’s Museum of Natural History came to life each night? Ben Stiller plays the schnooky new guard, but the fun is in the supporting cast: Robin Williams as Teddy Roosevelt, Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan as itty-bitty historical figures, Ricky Gervais, Dick Van Dyke, and the unstoppable Mickey Rooney. (PG; runs through Dec. 31, 2013) TY BURR

CENTER STAGE ★★ ½

(Comcast Movie Collections: Streampix) The story is old, but the energies are new in another variation on kids dying to make it as performers, in this case with a thinly veiled version of the American Ballet Theatre. The likable young ensemble cast, which includes ballet dancers Ethan Stiefel, Amanda Schull, and Sascha Radetsky, overcomes predictability and the frequent echoes of predecessors. (PG-13; runs through Aug. 23, 2013)
