THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO ★★★

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) David Fincher disinfects the luridness of the first of Stieg Larsson’s fun-to-read Swedish bestsellers until overheated trash assumes the chilly, clammy precision of a Fincher production, which is to say that the violence is both terrible and extremely alluring. Fincher also clearly adores his brutal (and brutally funny) cyberpunk played by Rooney Mara, whose dead seriousness is a grim hoot. With Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, and Christopher Plummer. THE SITTER ★★

(Comcast Movie Collections: Just In) “Adventures in Babysitting’’ airlifted into Judd Apatow’s neck of the woods. You get Jonah Hill at his most toadlike, crass racial and sexual stereotypes, more drugs than a DEA evidence room, reckless child endangerment, language to drop a nun, and a very strange white boy crush on all things black and urban. Some laughs, too, but not enough. (R; runs through Aug. 25) TY BURR

(SHO on Comcast) Following on the heels of “Persuasion’’ and “Sense and Sensibility,’’ this sunny delight reconfirms that Jane Austen is one of film’s hottest writers. The adaptation rides the punctured confidence Gwyneth Paltrow projects in the title role. Anything but clueless as a provincial English Miss Fixit, she high-handedly dispenses romantic advice that’s invariably wrong, yet projects a redeeming air of good-heartedness and quality. (PG; runs through April 3)
