Richie takes airy ride in country

The soul pop legend’s enjoyably sunny new album is essentially a greatest hits release shot through a contemporary Nashville filter. That his songs work so well slightly stripped of orchestration and then readorned with banjos, fiddles, and steel guitars probably says more about the way current country music owes a debt to ‘80s pop and rock - and Richie’s place in that firmament- then it does about Richie bending to Music City.
