‘Boy’ pluckishly tells sad tale

*** Boy A Maori kid (the charming James Rolleston) copes with a wayward jailbird dad (writer-director Taika Waititi). The movie rollicks along with style and energy, but the visual exuberance feels defensive, a way to address anxieties that are too hard to look in the eye. An art-house crowd pleaser, nonetheless.
