‘Don Giovanni’ lite goes for laughs at Boston Conservatory Theater

In Mozart’s sexy “Don Giovanni,’’ the comic and tragic make often uncomfortable bedfellows. Recent productions have tended to emphasize the opera’s darker side. For the production running this weekend at the Boston Conservatory Theater, however, director Johnathon Pape stresses the comic, even slapstick elements, wringing laughs at every turn. This is a “Don Giovanni’’ lite. Here, a buffoonish and mugging Leporello comes close to stealing the show, while Don Giovanni seems almost a bystander - a nice, wholesome, horny fellow rather than a nihilistic hellion.
