Frank talk about life on the campaign trail

It’s no secret that Barney Frank was no fan of campaigning, and it’s one of the reasons he decided to retire after 16 terms in Congress. But we didn’t realize how much he disliked it. In the new issue of Men’s Journal, Frank calls campaigning the “most god-awful human activity that doesn’t involve physical pain. . . . It’s high tension, and it’s boring and difficult work - begging people for money and debasing yourself.’’ The lawmaker also shares a bit of advice for elected officials ensnared in scandal. (Frank knows whereof he speaks: In 1990, he was reprimanded by the House after it was revealed that a former companion had run a gay prostitution ring out of the congressman’s D.C. apartment – without the congressman’s knowledge.) “The lawyers come and tell you not to admit anything. But you can’t deny some things and be silent on others,’’ says Frank. “Just be completely open: Deny what’s not true and admit what is.’’
