What’s on TV tonight: Critic’s corner for Friday, April 27

Animal Planet/Sea Shepherd

Whale Wars: Viking Shores 9 p.m., Animal Planet

If Captain Paul Watson has saved as many whales as he has boring Friday nights in front of the tube, he’s done well. Four seasons in, it’s still a thrill to watch his Sea Shepherd crew mess with the whaling industry, flinging bottles of butyric acid at their decks, deploying prop-foulers, and otherwise irritating them away from their quotas. Now, after a 26-year absence, Watson and his crew return to the Faroe Islands to combat Grindadráp, an annual tradition in which islanders slaughter nearly 1,000 pilot whales. Needless to say, the Faroese are none too psyched to see him.

Ratings are low but climbing for Mitch Glazer’s thoroughly attractive period drama set in late-’50s Miami Beach, and despite its iffy start, the show’s been renewed for a second season. You can spare yourself a Netflix marathon months from now by catching up on the first three episodes at www.starz.com. Pictured: Danny Huston.
