What’s on TV tonight: Critic’s Corner for Wednesday, May 23

JIM BRIDGES/ABC

Revenge 10 p.m., Channel 5

Other shows have gotten better ratings and bigger buzz, but this retro ABC soap was my favorite new show of the season. One reason has been the terrific cast, including star Emily VanCamp (pictured), playing against good-girl type, as hardened vengeance-seeker Emily Thorne, and Madeleine Stowe, clearly relishing the camp factor of playing the evil Hamptons socialite Victoria Grayson. Picked up for a second season of sudsy goodness, tonight’s finale offers an explosive end.

Don’t Trust the B in Apt. 23 9:30 p.m., Channel 5

The description of this show — sweet, naive girl moves in with mean, jaded, scheming New Yorker who is best friends with “Dawson’s Creek” actor James Van Der Beek — didn’t have us hopeful. But this sitcom has turned into a trustworthy little comedy, as the sweet girl proves herself no dupe, the mean girl shows some heart, and Van Der Beek consistently draws laughs at his own expense. Tonight’s first season finale finds the Beek from the “Creek” battling the former man of steel himself as he and Dean Cain face off behind the scenes on “Dancing With the Stars.” Pictured (from left): Van Der Beek and Ray Ford.
