Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Boardwalk Empire 9 p.m., HBO

As if this HBO series didn’t have enough acting firepower, they went and added Bobby Cannavale to the operatic tale of Prohibition-era power grabs, murders, misdeeds, and misfits. The Emmy-winning and Tony-nominated Cannavale has excelled on every platform from TV (“Third Watch,” “100 Centre St.,” “Will & Grace”) to the big screen (“The Station Agent”) to the Broadway stage (“Mauritius” and the upcoming “Glengarry Glen Ross” revival). He joins “Boardwalk Empire” as Gyp Rosetti, a New York bootlegger with a very short fuse who will likely be making trouble. This may not be so lucky for Nucky but it should be good for viewers.
