What’s on TV tonight: Critic’s corner

SNL Weekend Update Thursday 8 p.m., Channel 7

I was not crazy about Jay Pharoah’s Barack Obama last Saturday, as he went for a more precise impersonation featuring Obama’s vocal pauses. But then I didn’t like Fred Armisen’s either. It’s hard to make Obama funny, because he’s so collected and so seemingly in on the joke. I expect this weeknight election special, which NBC hasn’t done since 2009, to feature a lot of Pharoah (above), as well as Jason Sudeikis as Mitt Romney.

I am glad to welcome this show back for season five, after last season’s fantastic and sweet election spoof. Leslie won the city council job, and Ben and April are now working in Washington. Tonight, Senators Barbara Boxer, John McCain, and Olympia Snowe guest star, when Leslie and Andy go to D.C. for a visit. Pictured: McCain and Amy Poehler.

The Office 9 p.m., Channel 7
