How I Met Your Mother 8 p.m., Channel 4
It’s back for season 8, with the impending wedding of Barney and Robin. And let’s hope that this is the last season. I love these characters, and the writing, when it’s good, is smart. All the time-shifting has really distinguished the comedy. But now is the time to reward viewers for their loyalty and protect the show from wearing out its welcome (cough “The Office” cough). Revolution 10 p.m., Channel 7
Last week’s premiere did well in the ratings — 11.6 million showed up for the first episode. Tonight is the test for NBC. You can manipulate people to sample, but you can’t get them to come back unless they like what they saw. I found the premiere pretty generic, as a forgettable group of people go looking for an answer to why all the lights went out. Pictured: Giancarlo Esposito as Lieutenant Neville.
