‘Books to Die For’ edited by John Connolly and Declan Burke

“Books to Die For: The World’s Greatest Mystery Writers on the World’s Greatest Mystery Novels” (Atria) is a must-have for readers and writers alike. Editors John Connolly and Declan Burke have collected more than 100 reading recommendations, beginning with Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Dupin Stories,” published in 1841, and ending 500 pages later with Mark Gimenez’s 2008 mystery “The Perk.” In addition, each essay offers insights into the art and craft of writing mysteries, so you learn, for example, that Elmore Leonard read George V. Higgins’s “The Friends of Eddie Coyle” in one sitting and thought, “So this is how you do it.”
