Critic’s corner: What’s on TV tonight

Jennifer Clasen/FOX

Ben and Kate 8:30 p.m., Channel 25

I have a minor crush on this show. It’s a small sitcom about nothing much except a bunch of people acting goofy. It’s like a comic version of the movie “You Can Count on Me,” as Kate deals with her erratic brother Ben. The supporting cast is very appealing, particularly Lucy Punch as BJ. Her timing is off just enough to be funny. Pictured: Dakota Johnson and Nat Faxon.

Emily Owens, M.D. 9 p.m., Channel 56

Mamie Gummer hasn’t had much luck with her first two starring TV roles. Both this show and “Off the Map” were canceled (although the CW is airing all 13 episodes of “Emily Owens, M.D.”). Gummer is an appealing actress, but these shows don’t even hint at the kind of range she showed in her recurring role on “The Good Wife.” I hope she finds better material next time around.
