Old Sturbridge Village


THE YANKEE PEDDLER Stories, songs, and local history going back 300 years provide the material for this show by Brad Shur and Chris Monti. Your little ones will meet a sailor, bear, and the world’s largest wheel of cheese. May 24 at 3:30 p.m. $12 (recommended for ages 4 and older). AUSSIE ADVENTURE It’s not often we see koalas in these parts, so don’t miss the Stone Zoo exhibit of koalas, budgies, a Bennett’s wallaby, tawny frogmouth, and cockatoos. Watch the koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, and be sure to check out the budgies (also known as grass parakeets). May 25 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (through Sept. 2). $14, $12 seniors, $10 ages 2-12. LIFE IN A STREAM Streaming takes on a different meaning at this event where outreach specialist Jen Wimmer will teach visitors about critters that live in streams. Bring shoes and clothes that can get wet while you look for insects and crustaceans. May 25 from 10 a.m.-noon. $10, $30 (family of four; register by May 23 at 4 p.m.). FIGHTING FOR WOMEN’S BODILY INTEGRITY IN MALI Malian organization Sini Sanuman’s goal is to stop female genital mutilation. Susan McLucas will show images and discuss the work being done at this fund-raiser. The event also includes excerpts from the film “The Day I Will Never Forget” and a music video. ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL The first crop of the season at Verrill Farm is asparagus, and you’ll enjoy the harvest after a tour of the field where you can pick a few stalks. COMMUNITY BOATING’S SUMMER OPEN HOUSE Make a summer resolution to learn to sail and enjoy the view of our lovely city from the Charles River. The open house offers tours, classes every hour, and refreshments. Learn the ropes from folks at the nation’s oldest and largest public sailing program. CHESTERWOOD VINTAGE MOTORCAR FESTIVAL The grounds of the former summer home of sculptor Daniel Chester French has been home to this festival since 1974. In addition to the vehicles, the festival provides live music, kids activities, and food vendors. For the shear fun of it

WOOL DAYS AT OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE Did you know that farmers’ hands are nice and soft when they shear sheep because of the wool’s lanolin? Watch a demonstration of 19th-century-style sheep shearing and sheep herding, and learn about the wool textile process from start to finish. May 25-27 from 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. $24, $22 seniors, $8 ages 3-17, free for active and retired US military and their immediate families.
