Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV Friday

Venus and Serena 9 p.m., Showtime

… are all right tonight. … This documentary looks at the remarkable Williams sisters and how they rose to the top of professional tennis. Also included: Serena’s description of her split personalities, including British divorcée Summer, mean girl Megan, and Taquanda “from the hood.” The United States Tennis Association has been trying to block the film, based on the use of clips from US Opens, notably one of Serena — or was that Taquanda — exploding at a judge.

2013 Video Music Awards Sunday, 9 p.m., MTV

It’s the annual let’s-pretend-we’re-still-about-music awards. This year’s ceremony is at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and scheduled guests include Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Kanye West, and Justin Timberlake, winner of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Performance artist and canvas Lady Gaga (above) will open the show.
