Critic’s Corner: What’s on TV this weekend

The Paradise Sunday at 9 p.m., Channel 2

Set in the 1870s, this new seven-part PBS “Masterpiece Classic” is about the first department store in Britain and the ambitious man behind it. The man is played by Emun Elliott, and not Jeremy Piven, so he is mysterious and faceted. Based on Emile Zola’s novel “Au Bonheur des Dames,” “The Paradise” is good enough — not must see, but pleasant for those of us who enjoy observing the morals and manners of another time and place.
