THE DONKEY SHOW
At: Oberon, 2 Arrow St., Cambridge. Saturday, 7:30-10 p.m. and 10:30-midnight. Tickets: $25-$45. 617-496-8004. www.americanrepertorytheater.org
The deal: What do you get when you cross William Shakespeare with Donna Summer? “The Donkey Show” — a dazzling interpretation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” that is as much of a party as it is a show. Presented by the American Repertory Theater every Saturday night at Oberon, “The Donkey Show” has delighted Bostonians since 2009. Audiences have the option to hit the dance floor or find a seat as the colorful cast puts on a performance filled with disco, divas, and gobs of glitter.
The music: “We have a DJ who spins all night long,” said Ari Barbanell, director of special projects for the American Repertory Theater. According to Barbanell, expect to hear “your favorite hits and also some obscure tracks,” anything encompassed in the “ ’70s disco world.”
The dress: The cast, Barbanell noted, is always dressed head-to-toe in ’70s garb, but the audience gets in on the fun as well. “We encourage dressing up,” she said.
The tip: With two shows to choose from, Barbanell recommends the 10:30 p.m. showing “if you want to dance into the wee hours of the morning.” The show may end at midnight, but the dance floor stays open until 1 a.m.
