The third season of HBO’s “True Detective” is taking shape. It will take place in three separate time periods, as it explores a crime in the Ozarks. Like the first season, the entire third season will be written by creator Nic Pizzolatto (with one episode co-written by David Milch).

Carmen Ejogo will star as an Arkansas schoolteacher with a link to two missing children in 1980. Ejogo, currently appearing in “The Girlfriend Experience,” has been in “Fantastic Beasts,” “Away We Go,” and “Alien: Covenant.” She played Coretta Scott King in “Selma.” Oscar winner Mahershala Ali, from “Moonlight,” will costar with her, as a state police detective.

Let’s see if Pizzolatto and Co. can pull this one together, after the murky, dull season 2. The season will be directed by Jeremy Saulnier and Pizzolatto, who will make his directing debut.
