BOOK REVIEW

‘God Bless America’ by Steve Almond

Steve Almond’s fiction and essays typically are brilliant exemplars of take-no-prisoners irreverence and gut-busting, usually self-effacing, humor. While this terrific new collection of 13 stories is filled with the Somerville-based writer’s trademark satire, it also offers something unexpected: Almond shows himself a darkly lyrical prose stylist who can guide readers through the murky depths of an America dominated by materialism, narcissism, and outright stupidity.
