“Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt” (Nation) is as moving a portrait of poverty and as compelling a call to action as Michael Harrington’s “The Other America,” published in 1962. It is a joint effort of Chris Hedges, formerly a foreign correspondent for The New York Times, and Joe Sacco, one of a unique breed of cartoonists who are journalists as well as artists. Ordinary people struggling to make a living tell their stories in each of four chapters devoted to a community in dire straits: Pine Ridge, S.D.; Camden, N.J.; Welch, West Va.; and Immokalee, Fla.
