‘Building Taliesin’ by Ron McCrea

Carla Wright

Nancy Horan’s 2007 novel “Loving Frank,” based on architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s scandalous affair with Mamah Borthwick, inspired many readers to make a pilgrimage to Taliesin. In “Building Taliesin: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home of Love and Loss” (Wisconsin Historical Society), journalist Ron McCrea offers fresh details about the Wisconsin home Wright designed as a principal residence for himself and Borthwick. His book also contains dozens of previously unpublished photographs. McCrea tells the story of love, fire, and murder using letters he found in Sweden’s Royal Library in the archives of Ellen Key, the leading feminist thinker whose books Borthwick translated for American readers.
