‘The Biographical Dictionary of Popular Music’

What makes “The Biographical Dictionary of Popular Music: From Adele to Ziggy, the Real A to Z of Rock and Pop” (Picador) so entertaining are the scathing opinions and colorful stories. At times, you want to talk back to cultural critic Dylan Jones, editor in chief of British GQ. He devotes more than 20 pages to Keith Richards (who “looks like a slightly ruined country house”) and fewer than half that to Mick Jagger. Every once in a while, he’ll mix it up with an entry, not about a rock or pop band or solo artist, but about, say, the magic of the Laurel Canyon Country Store or music in shops (and the wildly inappropriate clothing he has bought under its influence).
