Many refugees spend their first night in America at a hotel next to the airport in New York, Newark, Chicago, Miami, or Los Angeles. The next day the newcomers from Burma, Iraq, Somalia, and other nations are dispersed to cities such as Mobile, Ala., or Fargo, N.D., to begin new lives. For “Refugee Hotel” (McSweeney’s), photographer Gabriele Stabile collaborated with reporter Juliet Linderman, who collected oral histories from some of his subjects and produced a primer on resettlement. The tentativeness that might be expected of a stranger in a strange land has an eerie presence in Stabile’s images. One family, fearful of being left behind when the next day dawned, spent the night in the hallway of their hotel.
