‘Grow This!’ by Derek Fell

Derek Fell.

Derek Fell.

Derek Fell, who planted his first garden at age 6 during World War II, has worked for the biggest seed companies in Britain and the United States. Today the prolific author conducts his own tests on flowers and vegetables he grows at home in Pennsylvania. “The right plant choice makes all the difference,” he writes in “Grow This! A Garden Expert’s Guide to Choosing the Best Vegetables, Flowers and Seeds So You’re Never Disappointed Again” (Rodale). In addition to recommending seed varieties and offering cautionary notes, Fell provides an excellent primer on soil, light, and other fundamentals of growing a garden. JAN GARDNER
