‘How To Think About Exercise’ by Damon Young

Handout

In "How To Think About Exercise" (Picador), Australian philosopher Damon Young sets out to demolish the notion that the mind is separate from the body. Instead of hectoring the couch potatoes among us to rise and shine, he highlights the importance of walking to Charles Darwin's intellectual genius. For Darwin, walking was an opportunity to reflect on his ideas without interruption. Young also argues that it's no coincidence that novelist Haruki Murakami's career as a writer began in tandem with his running regime. And if, the next time you get stuck on a problem at work, you get up and move, you'll be taking Young's message to heart.
