Ages 6 and up

Despicable Me 2 (98 min., PG) The villainous Gru has reformed in this sequel to the 2010 animated feature. In this go-round, a bad guy and his new serum turn a bunny, and later some of Gru’s yellow minions, into big, jagged-toothed purple monsters. Some kids, especially under-6s, may find this unsettling, especially in 3-D.

The middle ground

Grown Ups 2 (102 min., PG-13) Adam Sandler and his boys-will-be-boys pals are up to their old antics. Toilet humor abounds. There’s a lot of juvenile sexual innuendo. There are relatively mild jokes about marital sex and how the boys “hooked up” with women in their single days. The script contains hardly any strong profanity, and slapstick fights and stunts provide the only mayhem.

Pacific Rim (131 min., PG-13) Giant robots (good) battle giant sea creatures (bad) in Guillermo del Toro’s special-effects fest. The mayhem shows much architectural destruction and the disappearance of many humans, but we see little blood.

The Heat (117 min., R) Sandra Bullock is an FBI agent, and Melissa McCarthy is a Boston police detective in this female buddy comedy. The script brims with the F-word, the S-word, and a whole lot of crude jokes about female and male anatomy. There is much crude sexual innuendo. The mayhem features several fatal between-the-eyes shootings and a graphic knife in the thigh.

I’m So Excited! (90 min., R) Pedro Almodovar takes to the sky, with this farce about wild goings-on when catastrophe threatens an airliner. While there is no nudity, the film includes several highly explicit sexual situations. The dialogue (in Spanish with subtitles) contains graphic sexual language and highly explicit discussions about sexuality. Characters pop pills and use illicit drugs.
