Dar Williams, ‘In the Time of Gods’

If the Grammy Awards had a Mensa Society folk music category, then this new album would qualify. Dar Williams has ambitiously tried to revisit the Greek gods she read about as a youth (Poseidon and Athena, for starters) and interpret how they might relate to the modern world. It’s a lofty premise and, sadly, she overreaches with some unusually stiff, contrived lyric writing that spoils some of the great music behind it.
