Alejandro Escovedo was a big fan of artists like David Bowie and T. Rex, so it has been the acclaimed Austin, Texas, rocker’s pleasure to record his last three albums with famed producer Tony Visconti, who worked on classic albums like “Space Oddity” and “Electric Warrior.” Judging by Escovedo’s whip-smart new release, “Big Station,” they make a great team.

“This record really is the most Tony Visconti record of all my records” he says. “He was able to really bring himself into this recording.” Escovedo, who hits Brighton Music Hall Saturday with Jesse Malin, chatted with us about the five reasons he loves to work with Visconti.

1. Talent. “He’s a very musical person. He can play anything with strings and he has a wonderful sense of arrangement. He’s the kind of guy that can draw a performance out of you that goes beyond what even you realized you were capable of performing.”

2. Experience. “I really draw out of him all the things I loved on the Bowie records and the T. Rex records. The way they found the sounds that they found.”

3. Songwriting. “On this album it was different because we wrote a couple of songs together.”

4. Personality “He’s been making albums since he moved to London in the ’60s. He went to go really learn about records, he wanted to make records like [Beatles producer] George Martin and he has that air about him, he’s very much a gentleman. He’s a very compassionate person.”

5. Attitude. “He really respects songwriting. Not all producers appreciate the songwriter. They’re more into the guitar or the solos or the overall sonic landscape rather than the emotional content.”
