NIGHT WATCH: Music and Movie Fridays

MUSIC AND MOVIE FRIDAYS

Fridays through Aug. 31, music at 4:30 p.m., movies start at dusk, Boston Harbor Hotel, Rowes Wharf, Boston. Free. 617-439-7000, www.bhh.com.

The deal: Last summer, the Boston Harbor Hotel hosted Friday night movies, screened over the water at dusk. This year, they added something new: For three hours beforehand, patrons can listen while DJ Mike Amado spins a mix of genres to heighten the vibe. Moviegoers can come early to save a spot, and then relax in the sun, sip one of the hotel’s new summer drinks, or grab dinner. “We’ve always done the movies by moonlight, but the DJ is a new component,” says Heather Joselyn, the hotel’s public relations manager. Tonight it’s “Johnny Dangerously,” but the movies often follow a theme: “Yankee Doodle Dandy” the week of July 4; “An American in Paris” for Bastille Day, July 14; and “Jaws” on July 27 during Shark Week. In August, the hotel celebrates its 25th anniversary with movies from 1987.

Expect to hear: DJ Amado was recently named BizBash’s 2011 Boston DJ of the Year. He judges “by the crowd, but definitely what’s new and now to give it that lively, contemporary feel,” says Joselyn.

Who goes there: The setting appeals to just about everyone, but especially the young, after-work crowd. The crowd varies depending on the movie, says Joselyn.

The drink: “We just released our new summer cocktail menu,” says Joselyn, including a rhubarb gin cooler, with Bombay Sapphire gin, simple syrup, fresh lemon, and rhubarb bitters.

The tip: The lower terrace has a casual vibe, with the full drinks list but a summery menu (think burgers, sandwiches, and finger food).
